CBT and Other Anxieties

Elaine Iljon Foreman BA (Hons), M.Sc., AFBPsS
Consultant Chartered ClinicalPsychologist

Specialist in the treatment of anxiety and phobias.

The Cognitive Behaviour Therapy techniques used for the Freedom to Fly™ programme can successfully be applied to other anxieties. These include claustrophobia, agoraphobia, panic attacks, phobias, fear of driving, post traumatic stress disorder, anticipation of a range of catastrophies, as well as stressful activities such as giving presentations and interviewing.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has proven to be the most successful form of therapy for overcoming the fear of flying. CBT is a therapeutic approach that was developed through extensive research which revealed that people's behaviour and emotions are not solely based on rewards and punishments, but rather on their understanding of the situation. What a person thinks and anticipates greatly influences their reactions to events and people. CBT focuses on exploring the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and actions, and has been widely used to successfully treat various problems, particularly anxiety and depression.

By understanding one's thought patterns and how they impact feelings and behaviour, it becomes possible to retrain oneself in a different way. This new behaviour can lead to a more fulfilling life and become a natural part of one's existence. Overcoming aerophobia is not about learning to fly, but rather about learning how to be a better passenger and embracing the experience of being flown. With the help of CBT, individuals can develop the skills and mindset necessary to manage their fear of flying and enjoy the freedom of air travel.
